15th Annual Show - Me CHAMPIONSHIP
Brandon Smith Takes 15th Annual Dirt Works Show-Me Championship
West Plains, MO Brandon Smith of Floral, started in 7th position for the
40-lapped and worked his way to the lead by lap 10. Only two cautions marred
the feature as drivers drove from top to bottom on the smooth 3/8 mile red clay
circuit.
Brandon Smith of Floral, AR, scored a good payday with the win of the 15th Annual
Dirt Works Show-Me Championship at West Plains Motor Speedway Saturday night.
Smith qualified into the Championship event by finishing third in the first
night's qualifiying feature event.
Thursday 57 drivers registered representing five states. On a super fast track
they ran in six heats with four from each heat advancing to the nightly qualifier
and the top eight from that event transferred to the Saturday night main event.
Friday night four more drivers checked in and on Saturday night two more were
added for a total of 63.
Thursday's top qualifier was Jesse Stovall of Galena, MO, followed by Peyton
Taylor of Batesville, AR, Brandon Smith, Rusty Dukes of Fair Grove, MO, Robby
Arnold of Paragould, AR, Shawn Walsh of Ash Flat, AR, Scott Crigler of Alton,
MO, and Rustin Miller of Houston, MO.
Friday night qualifiers included: Jared Landers of Benton, AR, Mike Bowers of
North Little Rock, AR, Johnny Virden of Russellville, AR, Johnny Bone, Jr, of
Pea Ridge, AR, R.C. Whitwell of Sahuarita, AZ, Brandon Ball of West Plains,
Jeremy Conner of Essex, MO, and Robert Powers of Campbell, MO.
Saturday night's qualifying feature produced the last eight including: Brad
Buck of Paragould, AR, Kevin Salter of Batesville, AR, Jeff Taylor of Cave City,
AR, Mark Stephens and Shane Stephens, both of Arlington, TN, Marlin Shehorn
of Russellville, AR, Scooter Scruggs of Little Rock, AR, and Chuck McGinty of
Conway, AR.
The 25th starting spot was reserved for the highest weekly points driver who
had not already qualified into the feature event, and that spot went to Chris
Piper of West Plains.
In a lap 1 melee Brad Buck, who started inside row 2, brought out a caution
and the incident resulted in him being sidelined. Polesitter, Jesse Stovall
held the lead until lap 10 as Brandon Smith manuvered his #23 from the inside
fourth row to the lead. At that point it appeared he had the field covered as
he maintained that spot throughout.
On lap 5, Scott Crigler pulled up indicating a flat and he was given time to
change it and rejoin the field at the rear. A restart was recorded on lap 5,
but no other cautions slowed the field throughout the events 40 laps.

Support class feature winners were Jerry Buck of Paragould, AR, in the Super
Stock class, and Chuck Russell of West Plains, in the Hobby Stock. The Cruiser
feature win went to Clifford Collins, II, of West Plains and the Youth Hobby
Stock feature went to Austin White of Willow Springs, MO.
Round 2 of 15th Annual Show-Me Championship (Friday Aug
3,)
West Plains, MO Round 2 of the qualifying was completed and eight more
modified drivers have been assured a starting spot in Saturday nights 15th Annual
Dirt Works sponsored Show-Me Championship main event. With temperatures soaring
into the 90's during the day time fans and drivers were relieved when the sun
set and temperatures moderated a bit.
Taking the top qualifying spot tonight was Jared Landers of Benton, AR, followed
by Mike Bowers of North Little Rock, AR, Johnny Virden of Russellville, AR,
Johnny Bone, Jr., of Pea Ridge, AR, R.C. Whitwell of Sahuarita, AZ, Brandon
Ball of West Plains, Jeremy Conner of Essex, MO, and Robert Powers of Campbell,
MO, rounded out the top eight.
In the weekly points event for the Cruisers, Clifford Collins, II,
of West Plains, won the feature. John Stiner of West Plains, finished second
followed by Tyler Newcom of Hardy, AR, Mark Doiron and Bill Harden, both of
West Plains, Sissy Ratliff Seamans of Imboden, AR, Rhonda Gunter of West Plains,
Murrill Pace of Gainesville, MO and Clifford Collins of West Plains.
Saturday night's action is guaranteed to be exciting for the fans and challenging
for the remaining 45 drivers and any new drivers who decide to make a run at
the $6,500 winner's check. Sixty-one drivers from five states have now registered
for the event. The same format will be used Saturday night, with the final night
qualifying feature determining the last eight to advance. The 25th starting
spot will be filled by the West Plains Motor Speedway weekly competitor with
the highest points and not already qualified into the event.
Support class for the final night of this event will be the Super Stock. General
admission gates will open at 6 p.m., hotlaps at 7:30 p.m., and the driver's
draw will also cut off at that time, with racing set for 8 p.m. Adult admission
will be $12, kids 7-11 $3, and those 6 and under are always free.
Round 1 of 15th Annual Show-Me Championship in Record Book
(Thursday - Aug. 2).
The 15th Annual Dirt Works sponsored Show-Me Championship for modifieds kicked
off with Round 1 of qualifying action on Thursday night at West Plains Motor
Speedway. Five different states were represented in the field of 57 drivers
who signed in for the first night of action.
The program format allows drivers to attempt to qualify on any or all three
consecutive nights. Thursday night's action produced the first eight to transfer
into the Championship feature on Saturday night where the winner will pocket
a hefty $6,500 and the starting driver will get $650.
The first eight drivers to advance into the Championship feature included Jesse
Stovall of Galena, MO, Peyton Taylor of Batesville, AR, Brandon Smith of Floral,
AR, Rusty Dukes of Fair Grove, MO, Robby Arnold of Paragould, AR, Shawn Walsh
of Ash Flat, AR, Scott Crigler of Alton, MO and Rustin Miller of Houston, MO.
Weekly points races were run for the Hobby Stock class and the feature
winner was Chuck Russell of West Plains, followed by Dexter Frost of
West Plains, Shane Hitt of Birch Tree, Dean Smith of Mammoth Spring, AR, Jessie
Shearin of Blue Springs, MO, Brock Frost of Birch Tree, Scott Todd of Hardy,
AR, Travis Burnett of Ava, MO, Korey Whitelock of Alton, MO, and Bobby Bryant
of West Plains.
Winner of the Youth Hobby Stock feature was Austin White of Willow
Springs, MO, followed by Ben Piper and Kyle Duke, both of West Plains, and Cody
Toten of Pomona, rounded out the field.
